The Upper Mustang Trek is a moderate-level Himalayan journey that reaches a maximum altitude of 4,230 meters at Marang La and is best suited for culture lovers, adventure seekers wanting to explore a restricted region, and travelers fascinated by a unique Tibetan-influenced landscape. Located just below the Tibetan border, Upper Mustang—often called “The Last Forbidden Kingdom”—is one of Nepal’s most culturally preserved regions, featuring the ancient walled city of Lo-Manthang, centuries-old monasteries, sacred stupas, mani walls, chortens, mysterious cliff caves, and a striking desert-like terrain that sets it apart from other treks in Nepal. The journey begins with a scenic flight from Pokhara to Jomsom and continues through beautiful villages such as Kagbeni, Chele, Ghami, Charang, and finally Lo-Manthang, with breathtaking views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Nilgiri throughout the trail. A special restricted-area permit is mandatory for this trek, which helps preserve its authentic culture and environment.

One of the key highlights is the famous Tiji Festival—a colorful three-day Buddhist celebration held in Lo-Manthang between early and late May (dates vary each year), during which monks perform sacred masked dances to symbolize the victory of good over evil. Because Upper Mustang lies in a rain shadow area, it is an excellent trekking destination even during the monsoon season, with the best times to visit being spring (March–May), autumn (September–November), and surprisingly, also summer/monsoon (June–August). In addition to its cultural richness, the trek offers peaceful trails, fewer crowds compared to Everest and Annapurna, unique photography opportunities, and an exceptional chance to experience ancient Himalayan traditions that have remained almost unchanged for centuries.
