Responsible Travel & Porter Welfare

How we treat our team, the mountains and the communities we visit

Home Responsible Travel & Porter Welfare

The people who carry your bags make your trek possible, and we treat them that way. Unique Nepal follows the porter safety guidelines of the International Porter Protection Group.

Our commitments to our team

  • Fair wages paid on time, plus tips that go directly to the staff
  • A maximum load of 25 kg per porter, shared between two trekkers
  • Accident and rescue insurance for every guide and porter
  • Warm clothing, boots, sunglasses and a sleeping place indoors at altitude
  • The same right to medical care and evacuation as our clients
  • Training and a path for porters to become licensed guides

Our commitments to the mountains

  • Carry out all non-biodegradable waste
  • Use refillable water bottles and purification instead of plastic bottles
  • Choose family-run teahouses and local suppliers
  • Keep groups small to reduce our impact on trails and villages

How you can help

  • Walk clockwise around stupas and mani walls
  • Ask before photographing people
  • Dress modestly in villages and monasteries
  • Bring a refillable bottle and take your batteries home
  • Tip your guide and porters directly at the end of the trek
