The Everest region, known locally as the Khumbu, is where most trekkers dream of starting. A short mountain flight to Lukla drops you into a valley of Sherpa villages, suspension bridges and monasteries, with Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam rising above every bend.
The best months are March to May and late September to November, when skies are clear and teahouses are open. Trails are well marked, but the altitude is real: most routes pass 5,000 m, so our itineraries build in acclimatisation days at Namche Bazaar and Dingboche.
It suits fit walkers who can hike 5–7 hours a day. No climbing experience is needed for the Everest Base Camp trek; peak climbs such as Island Peak add basic rope and crampon work.
