Bhutan is a small Buddhist kingdom east of Nepal, known for its dzongs, prayer-flag passes and the cliff-side Tiger’s Nest. The one-hour flight from Kathmandu to Paro passes Everest and Kanchenjunga.
Bhutan is best in Mar–May and Sep–Nov. Most sights are between 1,200 m and 3,100 m, so altitude is rarely a problem.
It suits travellers adding a few days to a Nepal trip. Every visitor pays a daily Sustainable Development Fee and most sites need a licensed Bhutanese guide. Trips here: Bhutan Cultural Tour.
