Overview

A journey through the Himalayas

A camping trek across the open Tibetan plateau to Rongbuk and the north face of Everest, with almost no other trekkers. It follows an old trading route over the Lamna La.

Fly to Lhasa for three days of sightseeing and acclimatisation, including the Ganden kora. Drive via Gyantse and Shigatse to Old Tingri, then trek four days over the Lamna La (5,150 m) to Rongbuk and the Everest viewpoint. Drive back to Lhasa and fly out.

Fit trekkers happy to camp in cold, dry, windy conditions. Walking days are 5–7 hours at 4,400–5,150 m, so a previous high-altitude trek helps.

Why book with us: A licensed Tibetan guide, a cook and yak team, and a Spanish-speaking tour leader on request.

Difficulty & fitness Challenging

Long days and high passes. Some previous hiking experience recommended.

Questions

Before you go

No. There are only herders’ settlements, so we camp with tents, a cook and yaks, and stay in guesthouses at Tingri and Rongbuk.
Nights in camp drop to about −10 °C in spring and autumn, with strong afternoon wind. A four-season sleeping bag is essential.
It is drier and emptier, with no villages or lodges, and you see Everest’s north face rather than the Khumbu glacier.
The vehicle stays within reach of the route, so we can drive anyone down quickly. We also carry oxygen and an oximeter.
